ATTACHMENT AND NON- ATTACHMENT – Part I
 (Article # : DRSAUSA_May2006)

In Gita, 6th chapter’s 19 and 20th Slokas narrated the meaning of a Yogi or who is Yogi? By the process of Yoga even a common man [running family life] can also become a Yogi. Here Yogi means not by penance but in an Unionized condition with Ultimate, being a real seeker or lover of God. Actually Yoga’s meaning is addition or attached and detached from other attractions of worldly materials. A jivatma covered with flesh, bone and blood may remain in a merging condition with Eternity by Dhyana [it is that only to keep a feeling or attention for]. This is the process or system to become a Yogi.

In Gita, Lord Krishna’s version narrated by Vyasa in this way, “Athmana, Athmanen, Athmanani Pashathi “ A soul [a jivatma or a seeker] by observing soul, recognizing soul. Not by ten Indriyas [eye, near, nose, tongue, skin, beauty, taste, smell and touch] and not by mind but by soul and through soul only. Then the jivatma is remaining in a merging condition with the Eternal soul. Now we may precisely say that a jivatma by minute observation can remain in a state of divinization or in an Unionized condition with the Ultimate. And that is that stage or condition of a Yogi. In other words, a jivatma when he is detaching himself reducing his attachment of worldly attraction, then he too can also remain in a merging state.

To achieve the state of a Yogi is possible by four ways.

First is Yam [controlling of Indriyas] wishes start diminishing gradually.

Second is Sam [balanced condition or Samasam] mind gets regulated even though the mind is active.

Third is Dhriti ] patience], Dhritya Yugtena Iti Ityartha= Dharyena= Dhrutya Dhareyna Grihitya’ means in short we can draw the line in this way that the perfection comes naturally by patience. It will comeShanayi, Shanayi” slowly and slowly. The mind will be diverted from out ward to invert [inward] direction.

Fourth is Nirodh; Actually it is the last condition of mind for Sadhana which is called as ‘Sadhan Chatusthaya” 1st Vivek, 2nd Vyaragyna, 3rd. Shatha Sampatti[six type] and last Mumukshu.

[By sadhana saints achieved so many things. It will be in a separate article on sadhan chatusthya]

The conditions of mind are five types; Kshipta, Mudha, Vikshipta, Ekagrra Vritti, last is Nirodh.

Let us see first, what is mind? People say so “NEVER MIND”.

There are three types of mind. First mind, which is called as outer mind, second is conscience [Judgments for good and bad] and third mind is sub-conscience or dormant mind. Outer mind is always busy with full of thoughts especially at the time of studying good books or listening any spiritual lectures even also when we are at praying.  Second mind, conscience is taking the decision about right or wrong. And third mind is for the Sadhana that is with the dormant mind. [avachetana mana or susupta mana] which is always calm and quite without any disturbance.

For example if we go to the sea shore, we will see that waves after waves are coming on the shore and there is no end of it, in the same way, if we close our eyes, we will find many thoughts are disturbing us means we are on the sea shore that is 1st mind. Now we are entering into the sea and then reverse water is the conscience, for yes or no and but when we jump right inside the sea and if we go in, deep into the sea base. What is the condition of that time? It is, we are with the dormant or sub-conscience mind, where there is no disturbance but we can collect Pearls and we can remain in a total peace or bliss with the Eternity.

What is the condition of mind when we are sitting in Dhyana or praying to God?  First condition of mind is kshipta. Now a day’s students are always in this condition while they sit with their books. Their mind is full of disturbances like hunger for food, anger, feeling un-happy, needs water and so many things. We can say that we the elderly people too are not exceptional from above conditions.

2nd is Mudha. Feeling of laziness, hanker for enjoyment, sluggishness means a condition of not to do anything even for the betterment of our own. Saint Sankaracharya explained in Moha Mudgar of Lord Govinda’s prayer as Mudha means this state of mind of a man is called, a fool or foolish.

Third is Vikshipta. This condition is the state of a man who does not like to hear either spiritual or any good discussion as he remains always with full of other thoughts rather in dilemma [dyadanda or didha], we may say it is a state of disturbed, perturbed, confused, worried, agitated, unsettled, troubled or interrupted mind.

Forth is Ekagra Vritti. This a state or tendency where man or a young child can bring new to the world or he can concentrate at a point even though he is having all the difficulties of world.

Fifth is Nirodh. This is a state from where saints start the penance for asceticism and he remains like a birds flying in the sky without any attachment. Nirodha is also a condition for common man too. Not for the saints only. A tortoise are having four legs and a head, if it finds any outside disturbance then automatically it’s hands and head goes inside so that nothing will happen to it. We too are having five senses and by sadhana, our all senses will be controlled naturally. It is a general saying that practice makes a man perfect. It IS AS AN ADVICE that A MAN SHOULD TRY TO CONTROL HIS SENSES THAT IS KAMA, KRODHA, LOVA, MOHA,MADHA AND MATSARYA. The actual meaning of NIRODH is not that. It is that by a natural process like tortoise, will control all our senses. What is the natural process? The process or the system is to sit in front of our deity.  From this condition, generally people say so that Astanga Yoga stars from here. Astanga Yoga system started long ago by Saint Patanjali before 72 generation of King Dasharatha’s dynasty. It is some 4500 years ago.
